Paws Across America 2005
Last Friday night the Paws Across America tour came into town.
It was held at the Abbey Pub, and I'd never been there before.
Teflon & I drove to the venue, but decided to eat somewhere else. We ended up at the Leona's nearby. The service there was lousy. The general feeling there was that someone lost a bet and had to be there because of the consequences.
After dinner we walked back over to the Abbey Pub and sitting right there outside was Kid606. So, I get Teflon to hand me a Ottoman Empire CD and I go over and talk. He was nice and we chatted, and it wasn't my usual "uh, what toys do you use" conversation, but instead was more about "biz" in general.
A sign on the door says Drop The Lime has cancelled, but Stuntrock will be there making lineup:
Stuntrock
Eats Tapes
Knifehandchop
Kid606

We went inside because I didn't want to intrude that much. At the door we were met by Teflon's former workmate Leroy (LEEEROYYYY! Ok, he's not that Leroy). While they talked a bit, I was peeking in and watching Stuntrock's Set already in progress. I owe the man a drink, but procede over to the merchandise table instead, as he's on stage. At the table the band Eats Tapes is selling all the stuff. I bought a shirt for Teflon & the new Kid606 CD. I talk to Mr.Eats Tapes and ask him if he's Knifehandchop, but he said no, Knifehandchop's laptop got broken, so he's downstairs frantically programming his set on a replacement. I tell him I don't know his music, but I will soon. During this banter, Stuntrock plays his track that was supposed to be on Ottoman Empire, but wasn't. It sounds nice live.
We get some ciders and head upstairs to stake out some seats.
Stuntrock finishes up and Eats Tapes takes the stage and after a bit of Ice Cream Van weirdness, drops a 4/4 kick and the acid techno starts. And doesn't let up until they're done. But that's a good thing. Midway through, I'm like, "I have to have this, this is awesome".
No waitress stops at our table.
Knifehandchop gets to the stage as they finish, and announces, that yesterday he had a Sony Vaio, but Kid606 spilled beer on it, so now he has this thing, but it's ok cuz Kid606 paid for it..."so let's see how it sounds". It sounded great. He did a set of more hardcore stuff, so we didn't get to here "Outside" (the bellydancer/snakecharmer track that Teflon likes), but I've never seen so many honkeys go for it. Almost made me wanna dance, almost.
Kid606 gets on and launches into an opus. I'm actually above & to the side, so I get to see him working the gear. He only had one laptop going, but he had it synced to a TB-303 & drum machine, and was tweaking sounds as he went along. I also finally figured out what controller he was using and was happy with that. I'm not running out to buy one, because, well, I wouldn't know what to do, and I'm still mid process of getting my own solution together. He did something with Wicked like he did on Shotgun Wedding vol.3, but better
He rocks it hard, but 1/2 hour before the set ended most of the crowd left. Maybe because as a DJ, you see the crowd getting tired and slow the tempo, but no, every time that happened he kicked it up to 11...
Teflon started to doze off, but I was apathetic to it, because I wasnted to see it all. I run down to the merch table and pick up 2 Eats Tapes CDs.
It was over, no waitress all night, not like they weren't walking around, they were. Resisting my get over here eyes and all.
So Stuntrock missed his drink.
I had a great time.

I just spent 2 hours writing a 4 minute track!
I've listened to it many times now and am not sick of it. This is an interesting sign.
Evaluation copies sent out. Will post critiques when they arrive and maybe the track, if I'm not torn a new one.
