After a few enterprising teenagers dropped in the store this month (applaudable in it's own right) I offer this.
If you want to work in a small business, like say, a record shop, you might want to shop there a while first. Odds are any small business has a close knit staff that has several comments about you, the stranger who has dropped in out of the blue deciding you want to work there, yet you've never been there.
Best place for teenage jobs:
Movie theatre
Fast food restaurant

Odds are, unless there's a sign in the window that says "hiring!" the place is not hiring.
Have a resume. I realize you might not have ever had a job, but some nice paper with a contact info is better than nothing, especially since alot of places that are small do not have "applications".
Start early. This month is a great time to line up a summer job. You might even be able to pick up some part time hours now. Call back. Most places drop your application in a pile. If you call or stop by and do a follow up, you'll be remembered.
Don't travel in packs. Come alone and don't bring your stupid friends with you. They will ruin your chances, as most adults hate teenagers because you teenagers are such dumbasses. A bunch of dumbasses all saying "Look, I'm annoying" is a bad way to help your future.
Do not be afraid to hit up your parents for jobs or ideas, although in truth, don't work directly with them. You thought you hated them at home? At work they're worse.

Good Luck
